Dimethyl formamide / DMF CAS 68-12-2

Colorless and transparent liquid with smell of light ammonia, soluble in water and most organic solvents, being a commonly-used solvent for chemical reactions. Pure dimethyl formamide has no smell while that of technical level or degenerative has a fishlike smell, and it will appear in layer after mixed with petroleum ether. It may burn or explode if encountering open flame or high temperature, and react violently with concentrated sulfuric acid or nitric acid and even cause explosion.Hazard label: 7 (combustible liquid).

   Application fields:

   1. The impure liquid containing dimethylamine can be used as analytical reagent and solvent of vinyl resin and ethyne;

   2. Used as the solvent of polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile and polyvinyl chloride, and also used as a raw material of extractant, medicine and chlordimeform;

   3. Used in synthesizing wet spinning and polyurethane of synthetic fiber;making plastic film;removing paint;Dissolving paint with low solubility, and making paint have characteristics of dye.

   Fire-fighting measures: spray water, dry powder, alcohol resistant foam, carbon dioxide, and sandy soil; cool down the container on fire with water.

   Attention: Stored in a shady and well ventilated warehouse; bfar from fire and heat source.

   Stored and transport separately from nitrate, nitrate ester, tetrachloromethane, phosphorus trioxide, triethyl aluminum, oxidant and acid.

   It should be put in the glass bottle, and then put in a wooden case with incombustible liner or an aluminum drum or galvanized iron drum; Be gentle when handling and unloading the package and keep the package intact.

  Emergency treatment:

   Leakage emergency treatment: evacuate people to the safe area and isolate them immediately and strictly control the entry to and exit from the site.

   Put out fire and cut off leakage source as much as possible;To prevent entering the sewer drainage ditch, space.

   Small amount of leakage: absorb by sandy soil or other incombustible materials, or rinse and dilute with large amount of water and drain to wastewater system.

   Large amount of leakage: build an embankment or dig a pit to take the liquid in; cover with foam; pump the liquid into a dedicated container by an explosion-proof pump, and then recover or transfer it to the waste treatment place.

   Disposal of wastes: dissolve the wastes in combustible solvent and then burn. The gas discharged from incinerator should be removed of hazardous component through the alkali scrubber.

   Method of health hazard: inhalation, ingestion and absorption by skin.

   Health hazard: the liquid has mediate toxicity, and after invading the body, it is mainly metabolized in the liver and excreted rapidly, having certain damage to the kidney as well.

   Acute poisoning: mainly shows ocular and upper respiratory tract irritation symptoms, and headache, anxiety, nausea, vomit, bellyache, constipation etc. Hepatic lesion may appear several days after being poisoned with symptoms of hepatic intumescence, ache in liver and icterus.The patients being poisoned by skin absorption will appear such symptoms as vesicle, sticky and rough, local anesthesia, itching, causalgia etc. on skin.

  Protective measures:

   Respiratory system protection: wear a filter mask if concentration of the liquid in air exceeds standard.

   Eye protection: wear chemical safety goggles.

   Body protection: wear chemical protective clothing.

   Hand protection: wear rubber gloves.

   Other: smoking is strictly forbidden in workplace; take a shower and change clothes after getting off work.

  Emergency treatment:

   Contact with skin: take off the clothes got tainted and rinse the skin with a large amount of flowing water. Get medical attention.

   Contact with eyes: lift up the eyelid and rinse with large amount of flowing water or normal saline thoroughly. Get medical attention.

   Inhalation: go to somewhere with fresh air immediately and if necessary, accept oxygen therapy or artificial respiration and then go hospital.

   Ingestion: drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting, then go hospital.

   Extinguishing agent: spray water, alcohol resistant foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide and sandy soil.
