It belongs to an oxygen containing derivate of organic hydrocarbon, and is a kind of colorless or light yellow transparent liquid with soil smell. It is slightly soluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols, ether, acetone etc. It smells like peppermint when it contains small amount of phenol.It appears light yellow in color when it contains some impurity, which is generated and shows its color as the storage time goes and has strong stink smell.

Physical and chemical properties: combustible, hazard of combustion under high temperature or open flame environment. Violent reaction when contact with oxidant.

 　　Application fields:

　　 1. Major intermediate for the production of nylon, caprolactam and adipic acid;

　 　2. Mainly used as synthetic raw material and solvent in industry, especially paint containing nitrocellulose and methacrylate polymer, etc;

 　　3. Used as the solvent of organophosphorus insecticide and agricultural chemicals, dye, and grease, wax and rubber;

　 　4. Used as the levelling agent for dye and flatting silk, ungreasing agent for polishing metal and solvent with high boiling point for cosmetics such as nail polish.

　 　Health hazard: the liquid is irritant to skin: may cause damage to cornea when contacting with eyes;may cause anesthesia and irritant function.

　 　Acute poisoning: ocular, nasal, laryngeal mucosal irritation and dizziness, chest tightness, general weakness and other symptoms.The severe patient may appear coma, tic of limbs and pneumonedema, and finally die because of respiratory failure. People may return to normal quickly after separate from the liquid.

　 　Chronic effect: it may cause dermatitis after long-term contact with the liquid.

　 　Emergency treatment:

　 　Contact with skin: take off the clothes got tainted and rinse the skin with suds and clear water.

　 　Contact with eyes: lift up the eyelid and rinse with large amount of flowing water or normal saline thoroughly. Get medical attention.

　 　Inhalation: go to somewhere with fresh air immediately and if necessary, accept oxygen therapy or artificial respiration and then go hospital.

　 　Ingestion: drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting, then go hospital.

　　Fire-fighting measures:

　 　Small amount of leakage: absorb by sandy soil or other incombustible materials, or rinse and dilute with large amount of water and drain to wastewater system.

　 　Large amount of leakage: build an embankment or dig a pit to take the liquid in and then cover with foam. Pump the liquid into a dedicated container by an explosion-proof pump, and then recover or transfer it to the waste treatment place.

　 　Method of extinguishing: spray water to cool the container and move the container to an open position if possible.

　 　Extinguishing agent: foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide and sandy soil.

　 　Leakage emergency treatment: evacuate people to the safe area immediately and strictly control the entry to and exit from the site.

　　 The processing staff must wear a self-supporting positive pressure respirator and anti-static work clothes.

　 　Cut down the leakage source and avoid the liquid flowing into sewage and flood drainage trench.

　 　Matters needing attention in operation:

　 　Pay attention to ventilation when operations are done in an enclosed space.

 　　Operators must be qualified through specialized training and observe operating procedures strictly.

　 　Smoking is strictly forbidden in workplace, and ventilation system and equipment must adopt anti-explosion type.

　 　Be sure not to damage the packages and containers during handling and be sure to remove the residues in the containers.

 　　Matters needing attention in storage:

　 　It should be stored in a shady, dry and well ventilated warehouse, far from fire and heat source.

　 　It should be stored separately from oxidant and acid, and not be stored in an mixing way. It should be stored and transported as the general combustible chemicals.

　　 The storage warehouse should be equipped with fire-fighting equipment in corresponding type and quantity, and emergency treatment equipment and appropriate collecting materials for leakage.
