Methanol

It is the monohydroxy alcohol with the simplest structure. It is soluble in water and miscible in organic solvents such as alcohols, diethyl ether etc. As a kind of colorless and volatile liquid with alcohol smell, it can be obtained by the reaction between carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Application fields: used for production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, agricultural chemicals etc. and used as extractant of organics and denaturant of alcohol.。

　 　1. Used for producing methyl formate and methylamine;

　 　2. Used for synthesizing methyl-carbonate, ethylene glycol and methanol protein;

　 　3. Used as degreaser and analytical reagent, such as solvent, methylating reagent, stratographic analysis reagent, etc.;

　 　4. As energy and automotive fuel of good performance, it can be used in producing alkene and propene, solving problem of resource shortage;

　 　5. Used for producing growth promoter so as to increase grain production significantly, keep leaves fresh and grain strong and healthy;decreasing irrigation water in summer is beneficial for the growth of dry crops.
 

　 　Health hazard: low toxicity. As the industrial alcohol contains about 4% of methanol, it may cause methanol poisoning if people drinks adulterated wine made of industrial alcohol instead of edible alcohol.

 　　Body hazard: it has anesthetic effect on the central nervous system; may cause lesion of optic nerve and retina;may cause metabolic acidosis.

 　　Acute poisoning: mild ocular and upper respiratory tract irritation symptoms would appear if inhaling large amount in a short term (gastrointestinal tract irritation symptoms appear if it is rally taken); Headache, dizziness, hypodynamia, vertigo and even coma will appear after latent period. It will cause optic nerve and retina lesion and even blind if severe.Respiration speeds up during metabolic acidosis.
 

　 　Chronic effect: neurasthenia, vegetative nerve dysfunction, hypopsia etc. Degreasing, dermatitis etc. of skin.

 　　Emergency treatment: methanol poisoning person could excrete the methanol by drinking ardent spirits (with alcohol degree of 60°). Formic acid metabolized by the methanol can be excreted by orally taking baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

　 　Contact with skin: take off the clothes got tainted and rinse the skin with suds and clear water.

　 　Contact with eyes: lift up the eyelid and rinse with flowing water or normal saline, then go hospital.

　 　Inhalation: go to somewhere with fresh air immediately and if necessary, accept oxygen therapy or artificial respiration and then go hospital.

　 　Ingestion: drink plenty of warm water to induce vomiting, or conduct gastrolavage with clear water or 1% sodium thiosulfate solution, and then go hospital.

　 　Evacuate people to the safe area and isolate them immediately, strictly control the entry to and exit from the site and cut off the fire source.

　 　The processing staff must not contact the liquid leaked directly, cut down the leakage source as much as possible and avoid the liquid flowing into sewage and flood drainage trench.

　 　Small amount of leakage: absorb by sandy soil or other incombustible materials, or dilute with large amount of water and drain to the wastewater system.

 　　Large amount of leakage: build an embankment or dig a pit to take the liquid in and then cover with foam. Pump the liquid into a dedicated container by an explosion-proof pump, and then recover or transfer it to the waste treatment place.

　 　Attention: workers must wear gas masks in case of working at the place with methanol gas, and the waster water can be drained only after being treated properly.

　 　Hazard description: generate explosive mixture when mixing with air; risk of combustion and explosion when encountering heat source or open flame.

　　Matters needing attention in storage:

　 　It should be stored in shady and well ventilated special warehouse, and the container must be kept sealed and far from fire and heat source.

　 　It should stored separately from any oxidant, acid and alkali metal, and mixing storage is forbidden.

 　　Anti-explosive facilities should be adopted and use of any mechanical equipment or tool which is prone to generate sparks is not allowed.

 　　The storage warehouse should be equipped with emergency treatment equipment and appropriate collecting materials for leakage.

　　Matters needing attention in transportation:

　 　Transport vehicles must be equipped with fire-fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment.

　 　Transportation in summer should be conducted in the early morning and evening, all tanker trucks used must have a grounding chain and a orifice plate inside the groove so as to reduce static electricity generated from vibration.

　 　It is strictly forbidden to store and transport the methanol in an mixing way with any oxidant, acid, alkali metal, edible chemicals etc.

　 　Be sure not to expose the methanol under sun, rain or high temperature during transportation.Keep far from fire, heat source and high temperature area during stopover.

　 　Do not stop over near the residential area and congested area during transportation by highway.
