Dimethyl formamide / DMF CAS 68-12-2
Colorless and transparent liquid with smell of light ammonia, soluble in water and most organic solvents, being a commonly-used solvent for chemical reactions. Pure dimethyl formamide has no smell while that of technical level or degenerative has a fishlike smell, and it will appear in layer after mixed with petroleum ether. It may burn or explode if encountering open flame or high temperature, and react violently with concentrated sulfuric acid or nitric acid and even cause explosion.Hazard label: 7 (combustible liquid).
White moisture absorption crystalline powder or colorless, shiny diamond crystal, flammable. Almost odorless, sweet and bitter. Soluble in water and chloroform, difficult to dissolve in carbon tetrachloride, acetone, benzene and ethyl ether, insoluble in petroleum ether. Decompose into ammonia and formaldehyde in weak acid solution. When contact with the flame, it burns immediately and produces a smokeless flame. It's volatile.
